Content Analysis Slides from EuroIA 2008

I wanted to make a big shout out to all the folks who came to my talk at the EuroIA Conference today. Wow! Thanks! I had no idea so many people were interested in content analysis.

Here is a PDF version of the presentation: Content Analysis Slides [ PDF: 4.2 MB ]

And here is a link to a audit spreadsheet template that should get you going: Content Audit Template [Excel: 54 KB]

I am forming all kinds of things to talk about that I've learned here, but for now I need to get to bed if I have any chance of making to the morning sessions.

Understanding Your Content

At Adaptive Path's Uxer Experience Week in Washington, DC I gave a presentation on content analysis. It is similar to the talk that I gave at the IA Summit, but I did tweak it.

Here it is in PDF format if you need it. Understanding Your Content (PDF: 5.57 MB)

Example Spreadsheets

I've had a number of people ask me for example spreadsheets to help them with conducting a content audit or content inventory.

Jeff Veen, a founder of Adaptive Path, wrote an essay about content analysis back in 2002. You can find the essay and a basic spreadsheet on the AP site. I find that I often customize Jeff's basic spreadsheet based upon the needs of the site and the project.

Here is an example of a content inventory spreadsheet (Excel: 72 KB) that has been customized for site migration. The first tab is blank and the second tab shows what it could look like all filled in. This was from my days at PeopleSoft, but since the site (and company) no longer exist, I figured there was no harm in posting the spreadsheet.

The main thing to remember is that the spreadsheet is just a tool to help you capture what it is that you are learning about and seeing on the site. There is no "one true" spreadsheet that will work in all cases. Play around with it. Adjust the columns to capture the information that is relevent to your situation.

And remember - content analysis is fun!

IA Summit Presentation

Tomorrow afternoon I'm presenting a session on "Content Analysis: Methods and Mentoring." The presentation is not included in the conference CD, but you can find the PowerPoint slides here on my site.

Accepted for the IA Summit

I just received word that my proposal for a session for the IA Summit 2006 has been accepted. Yippie! Last time I presented at the Summit was when Peter and I both talked about re-architecting PeopleSoft.com (ZIP: 1.6 MB) in Baltimore in 2002.

I'll be talking about content analysis, how to do it, and also how to teach it to a non-IA. We've done a number of projects here at AP where the client has wanted to do the content audit and analysis themselves. It's a place where they see they could save some money since it is time consuming. It's also a great way to get someone on the client team to be intimately familiar with the site.

The problem comes when you go to merge their content analysis (often taking the form of a content map) into say, a mental model diagram. Sometimes it works great. Sometimes it's not so great. I've been working on what I can do to help mentor and teach the client the skills so they can make a content map and do analysis that we can build on for the rest of the project. That's what my talk will be about.
